2014 promises to be a brighter year for people needing the Winona County foodshelves thanks to the Merchants Bank's record setting 25th annual food drive.
Winona Volunteer Services Executive Director Sandra Burke, said the 280,000 pounds of food, which includes about $122,000 in cash, puts the operation in a good position entering the new year.
Burke says the local foodshelves normally go through 35,000 to 45,000 of food a month in distributions so the Merchants drive will prevent a lot of people from going hungary.
But even with the drive coming to an end, the need for food and cash will continue in 2014 with the next drive being held in March when Minnesota Foodshare month takes place.
Burke said in 2012 WinonaVolunteer Services spent $133,000 on food purchases.
