La Crosse-Sand
La Crosse’s Committee of the Whole approved a measure Tuesday that would require a special permit to transport mined materials, including frac sand, in the city.
The committee increased the notification range for the conditional use permit to any resident within 1,000 square feet and raised the application fee to $600 to cover the additional mailing costs.
Though the resolution covers all types of metallic and non-metallic materials, the main target is frac sand, even though La Crosse County now has no frac sand operations.
Several neighboring counties, however, have new mines as demand for the sand in gas and oil extraction elsewhere has grown.
The La Crosse Tribune reports the measure will come to the full council for final consideration Thursday.
