The La Crosse District of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are partnering to construct a watchable wildlife overlook at the Shady Maple pull-off.
The Shady Maple pull-off is located along Highway 35, part of the Wisconsin Great River Road National Scenic Byway. The pull-off is approximately one mile south of the Goose Island Entrance Road.
The overlook will provide a magnificent view of the Refuge's many bird species, especially during the spring and fall migration. The project includes installation of an accessible observation area, interpretive signs, spotting scopes and a bench.
Byway travelers will experience the natural and scenic sights and sounds of the Refuge, Mississippi River, waterfowl migration, and changing seasons.
The overlook is being constructed by Olympic Builders from Holmen, WI. Construction is expected to begin soon and may be completed by mid-November. The pull-off will be closed during this time
