Constable Charged

A town constable from rural Fountain City has been charged with identity theft with intent to cause harm and tarnish a woman's credit ratings.

Buffalo County District Attorney Tom Clark filed a felony criminal complaint against 51-year-old Jerome Gardner, an elected constable in the Town of Buffalo.

The complaint against Gardner claims he somehow obtained a woman's social security number and other information about her bank account and Discover Card account.

Buffalo County Sheriff's Investigator Lee Engfer says Gardner, from August to February, accessed the woman's Discover account 26 times.

A report filed by Engfer says Gardner admitted accessing the woman's credit card account for the purpose of moving money around to cause her problems because he was upset with her.
