Ax Attack

A rural Alma man accused of striking a 16-year-old boy in the head with an ax handle is scheduled to have an initial appearance in Buffalo County Circuit Court on July 23rd.

District Attorney Tom Clark filed a felony criminal complaint accusing 52-year-old Joseph Mlinar of recklessly causing physical abuse and great bodily harm to a child.

Mlinar is a member of the Alma School Board as well as a town board supervisor in the Town of Montana.

Buffalo County Sheriff's Investigator Lee Engfer says Mlinar allegedly struck the boy in the head at least twice with an ax handle during a domestic dispute at a home in the Town of Montana on June 14th.

A police report filed with the criminal complaint said the Mayo One helicopter flew the boy to a hospital emergency room for treatment of lacerations to the frontal head area.

Engfer and Deputy Ryan Howell were dispatched to the reported incident around 12:45 a.m. and learned the boy had fled the scene driving a pickup truck, but struck a deer on the roadway, disabling the vehicle.

Engfer's report said Mlinar described his actions as defending a woman at the residence that the boy had knocked down, injuring the woman.

The report says Mlinar said the boy came out of a bathroom and pushed him, causing him to fall down a stairway and land hard enough to knock a hole in a wall at the base of the steps......
