Boat Chase Arrest

A boater who allegedly tried to ram a water patrol boat on the Mississippi River and fought with a Winona County deputy is free on his own recognizance.

39-year-old Mark Thomas Pellowski of Stockton made his first court appearance Tuesday on charges that included assault with a dangerous weapon, assaulting a peace officer, fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, and drunken boating. He's due back in court September 24th.

Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand said Deputy Troy Liebfied was operating the department's boat patrol boat near the Winona Marina about 9:00 pm Saturday when he spotted a small flatbottom fishing boat approaching upriver with no running lights on.

Brand said as Liebfried and a second deputy tried to pull alongside the boat to get it to stop, the flatbottom allegedly continued upriver and at one time tried to ram the patrol boat.
