On a 4-to-3 vote, the Winona area Public School Board decided to close three schools.
The Thursday night vote was to close the Rollingstone, Madison and W-K schools and leave open the Jefferson and Goodview schools.
Voting in favor of the three closings were: Jay Kohner, Steve Schild, Brian Zeller and Karen Coleman. Voting against were Jeanne Nelson, Tina Lehnertz, and Ben Baratto.
The closings are estimated to save the district 1.5 million dollars each year.
The board chose one of the two options presented by a district task force which studied the district's financial issues. The other option was to close only Madison and Rollingstone and to keep W-K open.
All of the schools closings and building expansions and upgrades will be dependent on district voters approving a multi-million dollar bond referendum to finance them. The board has been looking at a possible referendum vote next Spring.....
