Shipping activity at the Winona Commercial Harbor took a sharp increase in 2016 according to a report issued by the City of Winona.
The report indicates 1,302 barges entered the harbor which was the most in the last nine years dating back to 2008. That compared to just 854 barges in 2015. The next highest amount was 1,282 in 2011.
The barges are used to ship commodities in and out of Winona including grain, coal and fertilizer.
The harbor will reopen for 2017 when the ice thaws on the Mississippi River allowing towboats to make to Winona and points north. The earliest opening on record, according to the U-S Army Corps of Engineers, has been March 3rd.....
