It's a voyage to honor the memory of troops in America's wars over the last 15 years. And it made one if its first stops in Winona.
Daniel Schenstrom, Justin Matejcek and Troy Smith make up "Operation Heartland." They started out paddle boarding from Lake Itasca Sept. 11 and are heading all the way to the Gulf Of Mexico.
Schenstrom and Matejcek paddle board, while Smith keeps up with the camper and supplies on the road. They can travel around 30 to 35 miles a day - depending on the wind.
All three are veterans and are using the journey to raise money for a number of veterans' needs programs.
Since 2001 there have been 6,852 combat troops and support personnel related deaths. Each plaque placed at VFWs, American Legions and city facilities along the Mississippi River will have around 155 of the initials of those troops.
Winona received two - one for the city to display and one for Winona's American Legion.
The locations of some stops and the men's location can be found on the operations website - operationheartland.com - as well as instructions on how to donate.
