In an effort to combat the impacts of Emerald Ash Borer a large number of trees have been planted in Winona’s Unity and Lake parks.
Chris Kramer with the city’s Public Works Department, says they look to lose 300 trees in those parks alone.
The city planted eight different species of trees Saturday, in an effort to minimize any future invasions.
Tree-planting supplies, mulch and payment to city workers is funded through Super Bowl LII (52) Urban Forestry Grants, which are awarded to municipalities in Minnesota for the state hosting the Super Bowl in 2018.
Saturday’s planting in Winona was one of the biggest across the state to come from the eco-initiative the NFL has been sponsoring in Super Bowl host states for the past 25 years.
