Barker--Assault/Threats

A 37-year-old Winona man was jailed Thursday night after he was accused of threatening a couple with a knife.  Deputy Winona Police Chief Tom Williams said Jason David Barker was initially charged with felony counts of second degree assault and terroristic threats.

Williams said Barker allegedly approached a man and a woman who were in a vehicle that passed Barker as he was riding his bicycle near Ninth and Jefferson Streets in the city's east end.  Barker is alleged to have accused the two with trying to run him off the street.

The couple, whose names were not released, told authorities Barker reached through the passenger side window of their vehicle with a knife with a two-inch serrated blade after the vehicle stopped at a stop sign.  The couple then followed Barker to his residence where they reported the incident to the police.

Williams said Barker admitted he pointed the knife at the couple but did not threaten them. Barker said he was almost run over by the vehicle.
