The investigation continues into the cause of the fire early last Friday morning that gutted the Winona Islamic Center and damaged other businesses on the corner of Third and Center streets in Winona.
Fire Chief Curt Bittle updated the City Council Monday night and said the fire looks like it started inside the Islamic Center.
Bittle thanked the fire crew that held their ground and didn't allow the fire to spread to even more buildings.
Bittle also gave credit to the Winona Police Department for their efforts to make sure all the renters got out of their apartments safe after the fire started.
Bittle told the council, although he doesn't know if it would have helped prevent this fire, the city may want to take a look at hiring a Fire Inspector in the future. The city used to have one but after the last fire inspector retired in March of 2009, city budget cuts have eliminated the position.
