Bonding Bill on Back Burner as Legislative Session Continues

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KWNO)-Despite being a non-budget year, the Minnesota legislature has spent little to no time on a bonding bill for state public works projects.

Senate Majority Leader Jeremy Miller told KWNO this is the first time he can remember that there’s been this little discussion on a bonding bill over a month into the session. He said that doesn’t mean a bonding bill can’t get done.

“I’m not sure how large or what the dollar amount will be on that but if it focuses on core infrastructure projects, asset preservation, roads and bridges, I do think there’s support in the legislature for a bipartisan bonding bill this session,” Miller said.

Lawmakers from both chambers heard project proposals across the state this past fall, with many proposals focused on water infrastructure improvements. Rep. Gene Pelowski told KWNO that lawmakers may pass a bill to address those projects separate from a bonding bill.

“We’ve got communities that have lead pipes still carrying water to or from homes. We have antiquated water infrastructure across this state. So, you’re going to see a rather robust water infrastructure bill,” Pelowski said.

Along with state dollars, communities may also be able to tap into federal funding from last year’s infrastructure law to address water system upgrades.
