The Buffalo County Sheriff's Department says a 35-year-old woman apparently drowned in the Mississippi River  near Buffalo City Wednesday night.
                     
Sheriff Mike Schmidtknecht said the woman, identified as Tammy Lorenz of Buffalo City, had been on a sand bar just north of Buffalo City near the Belvidere boat landing about 6:50 p.m. Witnesses said she was seen walking in deep water when she either went off a steep ledge or was swept under by currents.
                     
Lorenz did not resurface.  She was not wearing a life jacket.
                     
Rescue personnel were called to the scene and began a search. About 8:30 p.m. the body was recovered about 150 yards downstream from where Lorenz was last seen.  The Winona County Dive and Rescue Team was called in to assist in the search along with several other agencies.
