Bypass Nixed

A longtime move by the Mayo Clinic for a railroad bypass around the City of Rochester has come to an end.

The Post-Bulletin reports the Olmsted County Regional Railroad Authority on Tuesday put the proposal to bed...for good.

Mayo had sought the bypass because of an anticipated increase in freight traffic that passes through the city and near the clinic.

The paper says a study found that existing freight rail has enough capacity to handle rail demands.

The report leaves open the possibility of moving the train switching areas out of an area with vehicle traffic. It says that would cost and estimated nine to twelve million dollars.....
