Cal Fremling Celebration

Winona State University and a large crowd gathered at the Winona levee Friday afternoon to welcome the school's new floating classroom, the Cal Fremling.

WSU's Gary Evans spoke during the short program, noting the river has been pretty high and how that fit's in with the celebration.

Evans also thanked Jeb Griffith, owner of SkipperLiner Marine in La Crosse where the boat was constructed, for his major role.

The celebration included tours of the boat, live music by Turkey Creek, interactive activities with U.S. Fish and Wildlife and free root beer floats.

The floating classroom, which holds 49-passengers, was made in honor of the late Cal Fremling, WSU Professor Emeritus of Biology and noted educator, scientist and river enthusiast.

From educational workshops for area school children to introductory biology courses for WSU students to community seminars on river culture, the state-of-the-art facility will provide a gateway to exploration and knowledge.
