The Town of Buffalo constable, who was accused of trying to harm a woman's reputation by illegally accessing her financial accounts, pleaded guilty to an amended offense of misdemeanor theft in circuit court at Alma.
Buffalo County Circuit Judge James Duvall ordered 51-year-old Jerome Gardner of rural Fountain City to serve 30 days in jail and two years on probation.
Gardner, the elected constable in the Town of Buffalo, was instructed to avoid contact with the crime victim and pay restitution in an amount yet to be determined.
Authorities said Gardner obtained identity account information that he used to access a woman's Discover Card account.
An investigation assisted by the fraud department of Discover Card said Gardner accessed the woman's financial records 26 times over six months.
Gardner was granted jail work release privileges.
