The Winona County Board of Commissioners met Tuesday and heard an update from Fire Chief Curt Bittle and Sheriff Dave Brand about the 800 megahertz radio system.
Brand says the upgrade has been a big help in letting his officers communicate better.
Brand says when responding to emergency's like the tugboat that capsizied this summer near the lock and dam, the system works well across state lines with law enforcement and emergency personnel in Wisconsin too.
Fire Chief Curt Bittle noted the new system worked very well during the investigation of the downtown Winona fire September 13th when there were multiple local, state and federal agencies involved.
The upgrade was mandated by state and federal governments to improve interagency communication ability.
The system cost the county about $1,600,000 to install but the cost was expected to much higher. Brand says several grants helped defray the initial estimate of over $5,000,000.
