Data Practices Policy

Winona County is looking at updating its data practices policy when it comes to satisfying requests for public information and documents.

County Attorney Karin Sonneman is recommending the 2004 policy be updated regarding public access procedures that deal with both public and private documents.

Commissioners debated whether the county should charge fees for the data and decided to seek more information on fees and what constitutes public and private data. They also want to see the release of the data speeded up.

Sonneman is also recommending a responsible authority be appointed to govern the collection, use, and release of data. County Administrator Duane Hebert has been overseeing the release of the data but board members may consider hiring a new full-time person for the job.

The issue will be brought back at the aboard's first meeting in March.
