Drive Sober

Officer Jason Mork says the Fountain City Police Department is joining with other police agencies in Wisconsin and Minnesota to arrest alcohol-impaired drivers Aug. 17th through Sept. 3.

A highway safety program known as "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" is targeted for the Labor Day holiday in an effort to get intoxicated drivers off the road.  Mork said the goal was to create high visibility enforcement in an effective way to deter motorists from driving impaired.

The program also has resulted in more citations for non-use of seat belts as well as tickets for speeding, driving without a license and drug offenses.  Some 225 people were killed and 3,000 injured in alcohol-related crashes in Wisconsin last year, Mork said.

Over 35,000 drivers were convicted of drunken driving in Wisconsin last year.
