The shipping season on the upper Mississippi River in the Winona area got underway Friday.
The first towboat of the season locked through Lock and Dam Seven in Dresbach at 1:00 p.m. Friday. A spokesman at Lock and Dam Six in Trempealeau said the tow left there shortly before 4:00 p.m. and stopped in Winona around 5:30 p.m.
The "Wisconsin" was pushing five barges upriver.
The tow was not expected to go further north because the ice of Lake Pepin is still more than a foot thick.
The arrival in Winona marks the opening of the local commercial shipping season three days after the season opened in Winona a year ago on April 8th.
