The Trempealeau County Sheriff's Department says a jail inmate escaped from custody on Friday, stole a vehicle, but was then apprehended following a low speed chase.

Authorities said Michael Leavitt managed to jump out of a second story window at the Trempealeau County Health Care Center in Whitehall just after 10:00 p.m. Friday

He was spotted at a convenience store in Whitehall where he stole a vehicle that was in the parking lot with its motor running.

Authorities said following a low speed chase by deputies Leavitt was captured along Highway 53 south of Blair and was taken into custody without incident.

Leavitt was taken to Tri-County Memorial Hospital in Whitehall to be treated for a minor injury before being returned to the Trempealeau County Health Care Center.
