Jail Suicide

A 21-year-old man died Monday afternoon at a hospital emergency room in Wabasha where he was rushed after a jailer found the man unresponsive in his cell at the Buffalo County Jail in Alma.

Buffalo County Sheriff Michael Schmidtknecht said the inmate's death was being treated as an apparent suicide. A jailer doing a routine check of inmates found the man at 2:47 p.m.

The name of the man was not immediately released, pending notification of family members. Schmidtknecht said the man formerly lived in Pierce County, Wis.

Jail staff provided first aid until ambulance personnel arrived and transported the man to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Wabasha where the man died at 3:40 p.m., according to Schmidtknecht.

A law enforcement agency from outside Buffalo County was asked to investigate the death and conduct an independent audit of jailhouse procedures, Schmidtknecht said.

An Olmstead County medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine cause of death.

Circumstances of the incident were under review by the sheriff's office according to Schmidknecht.....
