Jailhouse Flooding

Houston County officials are dealing with what to do about a flooded historic jail building.
The Caledonia Argus reports the historic jail building, no longer in use, was flooded with an estimated 300,000 gallons of water on April 11th.The cause was a broken sprinkler pipe which defrosted a burst flooding the entire building.
The Caledonia Fire Department responded to the disaster and shut off the gas to the building.

The county's insurance adjuster estimated the replacement costs would be 2.2 million dollars, less a $2,500 deductible.
The 1870s building was replaced by a new courthouse and jail a few years ago. The Houston County Board has had previous discussions on what to do with the historic building.
The building was vacated in October of 2011.
