New WSU Baseball Field

Following a pre-council meeting with Winona State University officials, the Winona City Council Monday voted 4 to 1 to move forward in the process of a possible new baseball field in Lake Park.

The proposed plans call for the redevelopment of Bambenek softball Field 2 into a new baseball field for the WSU as well as the community. The location is just east of the existing Winona State Alumni softball field.

The amended request calls for an public forum before any lease agreements are worked out with WSU and Councilman Paul Double says public input is vital.

2nd Ward Councilman Gerry Krage said he liked the proposal but could not agree to use city park land for it.

The estimated cost for Phase 1 is $2,115,000, with WSU paying $2,000,000 and the city the rest. Phase 1 includes site preperation, building of the NCAA baseball field with artificial turf, site improvements and adding lights at the existing softball fields.
Phases 2 and 3 are estimated to cost over 2.6-million dollars combined and would include new concessions and restrooms and off street parking.

It's hoped the public forum will take place within 30 days and following any lease proposal between the city and WSU there will be a second public forum for more citizen input.

WSU officials say they would need the go-ahead by July to start planning for fall construction.

Council members Michelle Alexander and Pam Eyden were absent from the meeting.
