Winona Catholic Bishop John Quinn says a priest who Monday pleaded guilty to criminal sexual conduct in the second degree, will remain on administrative leave while the case is still pending.
Bishop Quinn said once the case involving 47-year-old Father Leo Charles Koppala is concluded Koppala will return to his diocese in India.
Koppala entered the guilty plea in Blue Earth County after he had been accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl, He had been placed on suspension last June,
In a statement released by the Winona Catholic Diocese, Quinn said "our hearts and prayers are with the victim as well as all of those who have suffered child sexual abuse.".
The statement went on to say the Winona Diocese has fully adopted the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People as put forth by the U-S Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Diocese of Winona is committed to the protection of children and the safe environment of its parishes, schools, and greater communities.
The Diocese encourages anyone or any organization, with information regarding abuse or exploitation of children or young people to immediately report that information to law enforcement
