Public Data Fee

A discussion by the Winona County Board of Commissioners on charging a fee for public document requests was postponed when the board meeting was cancelled because of the weather.

County Administrator Duane Hebert said the board will consider charging an hourly rate for preparing documents by county staff at a future meeting.

Hebert told a Winona Radio audience a lot of staff members may be involved in compiling broad and complex requests for information and the hourly rate would simplify the process.  Hebert said some requests can involve thousands of documents and many staff.

Hebert says under state law the county cannot charge to redact private information from public documents. There is no charge for someone to come in and just view public documents.
