Refuge facility

A decision has been reached on a new location for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife La Crosse District facilities.
Based on a review of the assessment and comments received during a 30-day public review/comment period, the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge have chosen to construct new headquarters/visitor and maintenance facilities closer to the river and Refuge on the 75.4-acre Mathy Tract.
The Mathy Tract is located on Brice Prairie near Onalaska, Wisconsin.
Three buildings, utilizing green technologies, are planned along with supporting infrastructure.
In the headquarters/visitor facility, an exhibit/display area, multi-purpose room, bookstore, and video alcove will be available to visitors. A shop and equipment storage building would also be constructed near the headquarters.
The tract was purchased in 2008 for the primary purpose of providing a site for the La Crosse District facilities. Funding for facility design and construction is available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
