The Southeastern Minnesota Multi-County HRA, based in Wabasha, will have to tighten its belt if Winona County Commissioners have their way.
The board gave its preliminary approval of allowing the HRA to levy for $100,000 in property taxes in the county in 2013 instead of the $114,000 it requested.
Commissioner Marcia Ward said the HRA, which taxes only residents who live outside the city of Winona, must live within its means. The approval is preliminary with final approval coming in December. Before then the board can reduce that levy amount but it cannot increase it.
The $100,000, which is $7,000 less than the board approved for the 2012 levy, includes $55,000 the county is obligated to approve based on actions by a previous county board.
