Following 2 days of interviews with 3 candidates, the top candidate for superintendent of schools was selected by the Winona Area Public School Board Wednesday.
Dr. Stephen West was the top choice of 4 of the 7 school board members, including Board Chair, Mohamed Elhindi, Brian Zeller, Jay Kohner and Tina Lehnertz.
Elhindi says the board is united behind the choice and if Dr. West is offered the job and accepts, he will do a great job leading the district.
Board member Jeanne Nelson, along with Steve Schild and Ben Baratto, listed Dr. Patrick Sweeney as their top choice. Nelson says she supports the board's decision and it was a very tough choice to make with a deep pool of great candidates.
Stephen Flisk was the third candidate interviewed.
West is the director of education services at the Eden Prairie Schools and Nelson and Lehnertz will make a site visit there next week and will report back to the board at their March 6th meeting. If all goes as expected a final vote to offer the job to Dr. West will be taken.
Due to expected severe winter weather, the board also voted to cancel Thursday's regular meeting at 6:00 p.m.
