Schumacher Indicted

Winona County Attorney Karin Sonneman says a 58 year old Winona man has been indicted with by a grand jury in connection with the drug related death of a minor.  Sonneman said the grand jury issued two indictments on Monday against Jeffrey Jon Schumacher.

One charges Schumacher with third degree murder-controlled substance, manslaughter in the second degree, and a controlled substance crime in the third degree in connection with the sale of methadone.  The second indictment charges Schumacher with two counts of second degree sale of methadone to a minor, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Sonneman said this is the second time in the recent past where the county attorney's office has prosecuted individuals for allegedly providing methadone which resulted in the death of another.

In 2009. three people were charged in Winona County with contributing to, and causing, the death of another person by providing methadone that was not prescribed to that person.  Sonneman said methadone can be a very dangerous drug, especially for those who take it outside the supervision and care of a medical professional.
