Sheriff's Department Cost

The Buffalo County Sheriff's Department is costing less per capita than what the average Wisconsin county spent nearly 10 years ago.

Sheriff Michael Schmidtknecht filed a 2013 annual report that says public safety costs averaged $158 per capita in Wisconsin in 2005. Buffalo County at that time was at $109 per capita.

Schmidtknecht said costs in 2013 ran $142 per capita in Buffalo County, still under the statewide 2005 average expense.

Schmidtknecht said the sheriff's office has maintained a "frugal budget" since 1999 when the Wisconsin Taxpayer Alliance began tracking per capita spending comparisons.

Schmidtknecht said the sheriff's department 2013 year ending financial report showed the office nearly $30,000 under budget.
