Education Bill
The Legislature has sent Governor Mark Dayton a school funding bill that boosts education spending in a number of areas. The Senate passed the bill Sunday by a vote of 41-26. The House signed off on the bill hours earlier in a 2 a.m. vote on Sunday.

Saturday Sports Update
Winona State University takes on Central Oklahoma Saturday in Game 2 of their NCAA Division II Super Regional Matchup. Central Oklahoma defeated WSU 5 to 2 on Friday. The two teams are back on the diamond at 2:00pm on Saturday. If needed, Game 3 will be at 4:30pm.
The start time for Saturday's Cotter and Stewartville softball game was incorrectly reported in the media today. That game is at 11:00am.
Also Saturday is final registration for Winona Winstars 5-10 year old fastpitch softball. It is at Wesley United Methodist Church from 9:00am until 11:00am.

Rushford Peterson Gets 3rd at State
Rushford-Peterson has finished third at the Class A boys’ state basketball tournament for second straight season. The Trojans won the third place game Saturday morning beating Upsala 50-38. The Trojans’ defense was fantastic forcing 25 turnovers while holding Upsala to 33% shooting from the field. Rushford-Peterson also held Upsala’s all-time leading scorer Christian Pekarek to just two points.
Cole Kingsley led R-P with 10 points and Jorli Hauge had 9 points and 12 rebounds. Rushford-Peterson’s Seth Thompson was named to the Class A all-tournament team after averaging 11 points during the state tournament. Rushford-Peterson closes out the season 28-4 and the Trojans return all five starters for next season.

Rushford-Peterson Gets Blowout Win in State Quarterfinals
Seventh ranked Rushford-Peterson held down high-flying Lakeview Christian 74-52 in the quarterfinals of the Class A boys’ state basketball tournament on Thursday. The Lions came into the game as the highest scoring team in the state but the Trojans held them to their lowest point total of the season. Rushford-Peterson shot 55.6% from the field and 8-20 from the 3-pt line. Seth Thompson led the way with 19 points while Jorli Hauge had 18 and Charlie Krambeer 14. Point guard Cole Kingsley had 7 points, 7 assists and 10 rebounds.
Anders Broman, the state’s all-time leading scorer, scored 34 but the rest of the Lions’ squad combined for 20. Rushford-Peterson held Lakeview Christian to 38% shooting from the field.
Rushford-Peterson led by 15 at the half and got up by 24 in the second half. Rushford-Peterson improves to 27-3 and the Trojans will take on #1 Marantha Christian Academy at noon on Friday at the Target Center in the semifinals. Winona State punched their ticket to the Elite Eight Tuesday night beating Minnesota State-Mankato 76-73 in a back and forth overtime thriller in the NCAA Division II Central Region Championship game. The game featured 12 ties and 20 lead changes and the biggest lead of the game was six points.

Two Winona State hammer throwers who have pushed each other all season finished in fourth and fifth place Thursday on the first day of the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships in Pueblo, Colorado.

WSU Earns Two Top-Five Finishes In Hammer Throw At NCAA Championship
Winona State claimed two of the top five finishes in the hammer throw on the first day of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in Pueblo, Colo.
Warrior senior Michelle Potter placed fourth with a throw of 188’ 3” (57.37 meters), the third longest throw in program history. Fellow senior Jenny Schuler finished fifth in the event, recording a throw of 187’ 9” (57.23 meters). Her throw is the fourth-best mark in WSU history.
Grand Valley State’s Liz Murphy won the event with a throw of 204’ 6” (62.33 meters).
Winona State will continue competition at the championship with Shanai Guider and Elisa Moenkedick participating in the discus. The event is scheduled to begin Friday at 6 pm CST.

Ramblers have good showing at MSHSL Class 1A Meet
Cottor sophomore Matt Schrupp won the 1600 meter run for Cotter Thursday at the MSHSL Class 1a Sub-section meet at La Cresent High School. The 3200 meter relay team, of which Schrupp is also a member, won their event as well the team consists of Schrupp, Erick Rico, Jacob Johnson and Emilio Taiveaho. Schrupp wasn’t the only member of cotter’s boys relay team to advance to the Section 1A meet in individual events, Jacob Johnson placed first in the 800. The other Cotter boys that will be competing at the Section 1A meet on Tuesday at Paul Geil field are Joe Koll in the long jump and 300 hurdles, Kenny Kirkvold in the discus and Marcel brown in the triple jump.
On the girls side for Cotter. Leah Koll placed second in the 100 hurdles earning her a spot at the Section 1A meet along with Maura Michener in the 400 meters and Paige Gernes in the 800 meters. The Cotter 400 relay team of Courtney Brendel, Elizabeth Fratzke and Mariya Swanson placed and the 3200 relay team of Cora Arnold, Mary Rose Costello, Karen Kersting and Paige Gernes placed third.

Big 9 Conference Golf
In the big nine conference championship in girls golf the Winhawks placed eighth with a 403 total. Abbe Partington led the Winhawks with an eighteen over par 80. Rochester Mayo won the meet with a 348.
