Winona's Theatre du Mississippi has received grants totaling $15,000 from two foundations to fund its 2014 season.
Board President Paul Sannerud said the organization has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council, through their Arts and Cultural Heritage program, and $5,000 from the Winona Foundation.
This funding, along with other funding they are seeking, will allow Theater du Mississippi to focus on its high-quality programming, making it accessible to the public and addressing historic and educational issues of the past in the community.
In addition, the organization is committed to paying people involved in the productions, something not always possible with smaller arts organizations. The stipends are not large, but individuals involved have indicated they are appreciated and that their services are often not compensated.
Of the organization's budget of about $50,000 last year, $36,000 was paid in stipends to people working on the productions.
