A 46-year-old Holmen, Wisconsin, man found out the hard way that Lock and Dam Five at Minneiska is not a bridge across the Mississippi River.
Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand said Timothy Allen Richert told officers he thought the dam was a bridge and that's why he turned off Highway 61 into the parking lot.
When he discovered his mistake his vehicle became stuck on the nearby Canadian Pacific railroad tracks and was struck by a train.
The incident was reported about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Richert was able to get out of the vehicle before the crash and was not injured.
