WAPS-Building Capacity

The Winona Area Public School Board's first look at a facilities work group's suggestions on the potential future use of district buildings included information about decling enrollment figures and school capacities.

Superintendent Scott Hannon told the board the district's total capacity for students is 5,136 and this past school year's enrollment was just over 3,000.

Hannon says there are several reasons for the gap, including keeping class sizes smaller.

The work group's suggestions include several options that would involve closing 2 or more current elementary schools. Board members will have a chance to look over the report before the next meeting and discussion on the suggestions will continue.
