The Winona State Warriors Men's basketnall team(7-5, 4-4 NSIC) scored early and often as they earned a 95-80 win over Bemidji State (3-9, 1-6 NSIC) Saturday. The win sends Winona State in to the new year with back-to-back wins. Riley Bambenek had a season high 30 points thanks to six made threes.
It was a quick start for Winona State, who scored 14 of the first 16 points in the game. Bemidji State momentarily quieted the run with a bucket but Riley Bambenek answered with a three and Winona State led 17-4 at the media timeout. The Warriors started the game 8-11 from the field while the Beavers made just two of their first nine shots.
Jenny Tuttle led the #16 Winona State Warfrior Women (12-2, 7-1 NSIC) to a 76-66 victory over Bemidji State (3-8), on Saturday afternoon to close out 2016. Four Warriors scored in double digits, including Hannah McGlone, who recorded her fourth consecutive double-double.
Hannah McGlone knocked down two free throws to initially get the Warriors on the board. The first quarter was tightly contested, but the Warriors were able to build a nine-point lead with just under a minute left in the quarter. Jenny Tuttle had a lights-out first quarter as she was three of four from behind the arc and had 11 points. As a team the Warriors shot 53 percent from the field and connected on five of seven, three-pointers, for 71 percent.
