Wabasha Sales Tax
Voters in the City of Wabasha will be asked to approve a local sales tax during the November 6th general election.
The Wabasha County Herald reports the city council gave its blessing to seeking up to a one percent local option sales tax with the proceeds earmarked for the city's capital improvement plan.
The November vote would be the first step in the process. If the voters approve, the request would move on the state legislature in the 2013 session. If it would gain approval there, a second referendum in the City of Wabasha would also need approval.
The council said the tax would not be placed on food, except at local restaurants. The council said it would give the city an opportunity to capture money from tourists who visit and use local services.
