Wabasha Suit

A pair of Wabasha County commissioners and a former commissioner were among those who filed a lawsuit last week against the county and a number of county and state officials that accuses the county's Safe Driving Class of violating state law.
Sheriff Rodney Bartsh says the lawsuit is intended to embarrass him and has been brought by people who opposed building the county's new Criminal Justice Center.

The lawsuit challenges the legality of a county safety course for drivers who have had minor infractions. The Post-Bulletin reports money paid for the class goes to the county or to the cities of Plainview, Lake City and Wabasha that also participate......

Roughly $400,000 has been raised in about 10 years, which has been used to buy new squad cars and other equipment.

Commissioners Deb Roschen and David Harms, former commissioner Merl Norman, Zumbrota resident Lynn Cliff and a group called Association for Government Accountability, contend the class is illegal.

The group wants the program to be shut down and is not seeking any money......
