Winona Bridge Groundbreaking

Winona's long-awaited Highway 43 bridge project is slated to get underway next week after a groundbreaking was held Friday.

Local officials, lawmakers, and Department of Transportation leaders gathered next to the Mississippi River marking the start of the 162-million dollar, 5-year-project to construct a new bridge and rehab the existing bridge.

Mayor Mark Peterson remembered a similar day back in November of 1942 when a dedication of the existing bridge costing 1.5 millions dollars was held.                                                                                                                                                                  
Congressman Tim Walz ,who was instrumental in getting federal funding for the project, called it an example of a government working together in a collaborative manner.

State Senator Jeremy Miller, whose father, former Mayor Jerry Miller, worked passionately to get the project moving, noted just how important the bridge was to commerce and industry in Winona in 2008, when it was forced to shut down for several weeks. He said that's why local officials lobbied for the construction of the second bridge.....
