Wisconsin Crop Production

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Wisconsin farmers planted 4.35 million acres of corn in 2012, up 200,000 acres from 2011.

Some 3.3 million acres of corn were harvested for grain, yielding 121 bushels per acre. Some 980,000 acres were harvested for silage.

Wisconsin soybean growers harvested 1.7 million acres, yielding 41.5 bushels per acre, down about 5 bushels, but above national output figured at 39.6 bushels per acre.

More than a million acres of farmland produced alfalfa and mixed dry hay in 2012, yield measured at 2.3 tons per acre.

There were 64,500 acres of potatoes planted last year, similar to 2011 with yields up and production ranking Wisconsin third in production behind Idaho and Washington.

The early spring and frosts in April played havoc with Wisconsin apple growers. The Dept. of Agriculture said 2012 apple production was the lowest in Wisconsin since 1945.

Apple produce totaled less than 24 million pounds, down 54 percent from 2011.

Wisconsin cranberry production accounted for 60 percent of the national crop in 2012.
