Heron Colony Closure

The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge says an emergency closure of the Mertes Slough heron colony is in effect starting Thursday.  The colony is located near the Hwy 43/54 bridge between Winona and Fountain City.

Going-Peace Poster Contest


Grace Going, 8th grade at St. Martin's Lutheran Grade School, won 1st place at St. Martin’s school, sponsored by the Winona Lions Clubs (Winona Lions; Winona Rivertown; Winona Sunset). Her poster was then sent on to the Multiple District MD5M (12 Lions Districts of which Winona Lions clubs are in District 5M1) level of competition and was the winning poster.  Grace’s poster then was sent to Lions Clubs International and was chosen as a merit award winner in the 25th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest.  About 400,000 children from 55 countries participated in this year’s Peace Poster Contest. Each year, Lions clubs around the world proudly sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This art contest for kids encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace. For 25 years, more than four million children from nearly 100 countries have participated in the contest
