Talking Truth in Winona Posted Friday, May 9, 2008
A big part of Winona’s Capital for a Day celebration will be how to reconcile our celebration of statehood…and a recognition of the sorrow that early immigration caused for native Americans.
Native Americans were evicted from most of Minnesota to make way for Eurpoean immigrants…and native populations were decimated by famine, disease and armed conflict with white settlers. In fact the largest mass execution in US history was the hanging of more than a dozen Dakota in Mankato.
Since 2004 Winonans have tried to address the issue through the Dakota Homecoming. Now as part of the Capital for a Day events a truth circle will be held in Lake Park.
Dennis Carter says Winonans and representatives of native peoples will come together. Carter says its important for people to have the opportunity to tell the truth about pioneer days that are usually romanticized and portrayed from a European perspective.
