SMU Prairie Island
Saint Mary's University is hosting teachers from St. Stanislaus Catholic school for a high-tech science workshop Wednesday at the university's new Prairie Island Field Station.
Staff of SMU's GeoSpatial Services division will explain the use of global positioning system (GPS) units and geo-caching treks on Prairie Island, provide river ecology interpretation, and demonstrate GIS and mapping programs for use in K-6 classrooms.
Wednesday's science workshop is a pilot community outreach for Saint Mary's, with the expectation that similar programs will be made available to additional area schools and teachers.
Saint Mary's is also using its Field Station facilities and staff expertise to offer river access and interpretive support to other community organizations and activities.
