Minnesota US Senator Amy Klobachar will be in Winona Sunday for the planting of several Cherry Trees during a special ceremony that will take place in East Lake Park.
The public is also invited to the event at 3:00 p.m. The event will help the city celebrate the 100th Cherry Blossom Centennial. It was in 1912 that over 3,000 cherry trees were planted in Washington, DC as a gift from the government of Japan.
The local event will celebrate the ongoing friendship between Winona and its sister city of Misato, Japan. Winona is one of just 36 cities across the United States that has been selected to receive the gift of cherry trees in honor of Japan's original gift 100 years ago.
In addition to Klobachar, the mayors of both Winona and Misato will be on hand along with a representative from Japan's Consulate General's office.
