Miss West Metro Samatha Phillipi won the preliminary swimsuit competition Thursday night in the opening day of the Miss Minnesota Scholarship Pageant.  Miss Mankato Natalie Davis won the preliminary talent contest.
                  
Miss Winona, Shelby Seimek. a student at St. Mary's University, is one of the 22 candidates competing for the Miss Minnesota crown.
                  
The second night of preliminary competition is Friday.  The new Miss Minnesota will be crowned Saturday night.
