Winona native Elliott Heath has qualified for the finals of the 5,000 meter run at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon. Monday night Heath placed sixth in his heat with a time of 13 minutes and 49.5 seconds, which qualifies him for Thursday’s final. Heath led the race for the first few laps and then fell back into the middle of the pack. On the final lap Heath passed a runner to make it to the sixth spot, which was the final automatic qualifying spot. Thursday’s final will be run at 9:38 p.m. Elliott’s older brother Garrett will also be running in the Olympic Trials. Garrett will run in the 1500 meter quarterfinals on Thursday at 6:50 p.m.
