Suspended Alma police chief Roger Engel might part ways with the City of Alma under a proposed separation agreement discussed by the city council in closed session. The city council authorized drafting a separation agreement based on terms proposed by Engel, according to Alma City Clerk Linda Torgerson.
Mayor Robert Scow was empowered by the council to execute a separation plan if he is in agreement with terms of the settlement. Engel has been suspended with pay since May 8th when the city council called for an inquiry into Engel's alleged mishandling of a criminal investigation case.
Details surrounding reasons for the suspension have not been released publicly. The city council has discussed the matter twice in closed session with its attorney.
Engel, a former police chief at Rib Lake, Wis., was hired at Alma in 2008. He's the only police officer employed by Alma. Buffalo County Sheriff's Deputy Todd Ritscher of Alma has been filling in with part-time police services since Engel was suspended. Terms of a proposed separation agreement proposed by Engel were not released.
