The Buffalo County Sheriff's Department says a 35 year old woman apparently drowned in the Mississippi River  near Buffalo City Wednesday night.
                     
Sheriff Mike Schmidtknecht saud the woman, whose name was not immediately released, had been on a sand bar just north of Buffalo City near the Belvidere boat landing about 6:50 p.m. . She was seen walking in deep water when she either went off a steep ledge or was swept under by currents.  She did not resurface.   
                     
Rescue personnel were called to the scene and began a search. About 8:30 p.m. the body was recovered about 150 yards downstream from where she was last seen.
                    
The Buffalo County Coroner was called to the scene.  The victim's name will be released after relatives are notified.  The Winona County Dive and rescue Team was called in to assist in the search along with several other agencies.
