A group of solar-powered cars passed through Winona Saturday on Highway 61 on their way to the Twin Cities. The cars were part of the American Solar Challenge, a 1600 mile cross country solar car race that began in Rochester, New York on July 14th.
One of the cars was being driven by a group of University of Minnesota students who developed it.
The cars and their support teams spent Friday night in La Crosse and were expected to arrive at the Minnesota State Capital Mall in St. Paul Saturday and be on display. More than 40 U of M science an engineering students are on the team. They say they collectively spent more than 50,000 hours last year planning and building their car.
About a dozen university teams were taking part in the event.
